About Roppongi Nouen

- The Experimental Agri-Dining Restaurant - Preserving Japan's Food Culture by Changing Agriculture

For all of the praise that Japan receives for its fantastic food and culinary culture, the reality is that food self-sufficiency in Japan is down near 30%. Put simply, the lifeblood of the nation's food culture - the farmers, fishermen (and women), and various food and crop producers - are unable to sustain the needs of the nation.

While we're beginning to see an increase of media attention on agriculture-related leisure activities, such as shared growing plots in urban areas, and images of celebrities out exploring Japan's rural countryside, the reality is that the average age of the working farmer is in the 60's (and rising), and that the number of individuals actually able to turn agriculture into a career are incredibly few.

So, what is it that's keeping the young generation from taking up a life on the farm?

Although there are certainly a number of complex reasons, it's fair to say that the general "image" of life on the farm hasn't been made out to be very appealing.
Farm life is viewed as hard, dirty, a lifestyle unable to support the needs of the "modern family", lacking in opportunity for freedom and diverse life experiences... For many young people, agriculture is seen as "unsustainable" on a number of levels, and therefore, unappealing.

At Roppongi Nouen, we saw this situation not only as a nation-wide dilemma, but also as an incredible opportunity.
A restaurant brought to life by a passionate and diverse staff with the utmost respect and appreciation for not only the farm, farming, and farmers, but a belief in the power of the food and a commitment to sharing the stories, culture, and dedication of the growers that breathe life into our menu day in and day out.

To us, the producers are the stars, and we provide the stage, hosting regular "Meet the Farmer" events that coincide with the dining experience, occasional one-day-only "Travel Restaurant" dining adventures held in collaboration with local growers, craftsmen, and brewers at special locations through Japan's majestic countryside, and an array of community-focused food and agriculture experiences designed to bring food-lovers from throughout Tokyo and across the globe together with the beauty of Japan's diverse and captivating food culture.

Roppongi Nouen also supports in:
  • Branding and related product development for local regions and their food/agricultural products in collaboration with small to mid-sized agricultural operations.
  • Market and related channel development for artisanal, local food products.
  • Creating generational and international bridges in order to develop new agriculture-related projects that support new models of rural-urban collaboration and business-lifestyle development.
